Route 66: Prophets

The Bible is God's BIG Story of grace climaxing in the person and work of Jesus Christ.  Every book in the Bible is one small part of this larger story and is pointing us in some way to Jesus.  Each message in our Route 66 series looks at one of the 66 books of the Bible.  In this part of our series, we look at the 17 books of the prophets.

Tim Theule | | 6/7/2015

The book of Malachi is the last book of the Old Testament and the last Word of God before the coming of Jesus 400 years later.  Malachi assumes, summarizes and applies the message of the Old Testament AND it contains yet another promise of the coming of Jesus.

Tim Theule | | 5/31/2015

The book of Zechariah is an encouragement to the post-exilic generation of God's people to rebuild the Lord's Temple and live their lives centered around Him. Through apocalyptic visions, sermons and oracles Zechariah reminds us that the Lord is faithful to His promises and His work is not yet done.

Tim Theule | Haggai 1:2-13 | 5/24/2015

The short book of Haggai is a call to God's people to commit themselves to God's work.  That call still rings out from God's Word.  God's work at that time was the rebuilding of the temple.  God's work today is the building of His spiritual temple through the making of disciples.

Tim Theule | Zephaniah 1:1-3, 2:1-3, 3:14-17 | 5/17/2015

Every time we pick up the Bible we are faced with a question: 'Do I believe this?'  Picking up the book of Zephaniah pushes that question upon us once more.  Do we really believe we are accountable to God?  Do we really believe God will judge the earth?  Do we really believe that salvation is possible for those who trust him?

Tim Theule | Habakkuk 3:1-19 | 5/10/2015

Be careful what you ask for!  Habakkuk questions God and then is shocked by God's answer.  And the same is true for us! But by the end of his short book, Habakkuk models a beautiful trust and joy in God.

Jeff Jennings | Nahum 1:1-15 | 4/26/2015

The book of Nahum is a courageous prophecy of destruction against the Assyrian capital of Nineveh at the height of her power. The prophet declares refuge and deliverance for God’s people who sit perched atop Jerusalem as the arm of Assyria surrounds them reaching all the way to Egypt. But God will act. God will deliver. God will save!

Tim Theule | Micah | 4/19/2015

The book of Micah shows us 'what the Lord requires' of us, our utter failure to meet that requirement, and the hint that God will meet that requirement for us through the provision of His own 'Shepherd-King.'

Tim Theule | Jonah 1:1 -4:11 | 4/12/2015

The book of Jonah, one of the most well known stories in all the Old Testament, stands out among the prophets as it shows God's heart for the salvation of the nations and in so doing anticipates the Great Commission command of Jesus in Matthew 28:19, 'Go and make disciples of all the nations.'

Tim Theule | Obadiah 15-21 | 3/29/2015

The book of Obadiah is an oracle of judgment against the nation of Edom for their betrayal and oppression of God's people.  Obadiah teaches us important eternal truths and points us to God's judgment of His Son for the sins of the world.

Tim Theule | Amos 9:7-15 | 3/22/2015

The book of Amos is the Word of the Lord about a coming judgment from an unexpected man at an unexpected time toward Israel, the Northern Kingdom for her long and many sins.  But, once more, as the prophecy of Amos comes to a close, we see that the last word is not judgment, but grace, mercy and hope.

Jeff Jennings | Joel 2:1-3, 11-14, 28-29 | 3/15/2015

Joel is called upon by God to trumpet the timeless message of the coming day of the Lord. Through waves of locusts and coming armies, he calls God's people to true repentance and faith, proving again, that our God is a God of grace, mercy, and a refuge for His people.

Tim Theule | Hosea 1:2-11, 3:1-5 | 3/8/2015

Hosea is a prophet called by God to enact in real life a stunning Gospel truth.  In His actions and prophecy we see the Lord's steadfast love for His people.

Tim Theule | Daniel 2:25-30, 36-45 | 3/1/2015

Teenage boys, world empires, prideful kings, visions of the end of days and a Sovereign God who rules an everlasting kingdom.  These are what the book of Daniel is all about.

Tim Theule | Ezekiel 37:1-14, 24-28 | 2/22/2015

The book of Ezekiel is filled with wild prophecies, crazy judgments and Gospel hope.  Here we see how Ezekiel fits in with the BIG story of God's grace climaxing in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Tim Theule | Lamentations 3:19-40 | 2/8/2015

Lamentations is a lament or a cry of grief after the destruction of Jerusalem.  God's judgment has finally fallen and now God's people are trying to make sense of what has happened.   In this message, we'll discover their lament is our lament and ultimately the lament of Jesus for us.

Tim Theule | Jeremiah 2:1-13 | 1/25/2015

Jeremiah was a reluctant prophet called by God to deliver a rough message concerning the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. But his message of judgment is laced with a message of hope and salvation, which is now being fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

Concerning Prophets

Tim Theule | Deuteronomy 18:15-22 | 1/18/2015

What is a prophet?  And why do we have 17 prophetic books in the Old Testament and how do they fit in the sweep of redemptive history.   As we embark upon a 17 week study of the Prophetic books in our Route 66 series, this message takes a step back to help us lay a ground work for understanding the office of prophet and the prophets unique place in redemptive history.

Tim Theule | Isaiah 55:1-11 | 1/11/2015

Isaiah is the first of the Major Prophets and weighs in at a massive 66 chapters.  The book contains proclamations of judgment, the promises of a Messiah-Servant-King and a perennial challenge for us.
