Route 66: New Testament

The Bible is God's BIG Story of grace climaxing in the person and work of Jesus Christ.  Every book in the Bible is one small part of this larger story and is pointing us in some way to Jesus.  Each message in our Route 66 series looks at one of the 66 books of the Bible.  In this part of our series, we look at the New Testament.

Tim Theule | Revelation 5:1-14 | 6/12/2016

While many of the details of Revelation are hotly debated, there are several undisputed hope-giving, endurance-building, worship-inspiring truths that we can know from this challenging book.

Tim Theule | Jude 1:1-25 | 6/5/2016

The book of Jude, like James, was written by a half brother of Jesus.  While short and to the point, the book of Jude contains a timeless and relevant encouragement for the people of God in every generation.

2 & 3 John

Jeff Jennings | 2 John 1:1-13, 3 John 1:1-14 | 5/29/2016

How important is the truth of who Jesus is to our mission as a church? How important is this truth to our life as a disciple? In 2 & 3 John, the doctrinal, moral, and love tests of 1 John, are practically put to use as John addresses both the church (2 John) and individuals (3 John), calling them to lovingly abide in “the teaching of Christ,” and support all who do.

1 John

Tim Theule | 1 John 1:1 - 2:2 | 5/15/2016

How can we know we have eternal life?  How can we know we have a genuine faith?  How can we know we are really a Christian?   First John was written so that we might know.  The apostle John says there are 3 tests to know if you are really a Christian and have eternal life.

2 Peter

Tim Theule | 2 Peter 3:10-18 | 5/8/2016

What would you include in a letter if you knew your earthly life would soon end?  The book of 2 Peter is what the Apostle Paul included in his last letter.

1 Peter

Tim Theule | 1 Peter 3:8-17, 4:12-19 | 5/1/2016

1 Peter is a book rich in truth and practical application.  The subject of suffering is dealt with in every one of the 5 chapters.  The book really is like a manual for Christian suffering.

Tim Theule | James 1:19-27 | 4/24/2016

The book of James explores the relationship between Gospel faith and Gospel fruit. Its 5 chapters cover a variety of practical and timeless subjects for every generation of Christ followers.  James is the next stop on our Route 66 Road Trip Across the Bible.

Tim Theule | Hebrews 11:32-12:4 | 4/17/2016

The book of Hebrews is a rousing and stirring self-described 'word of exhortation' challenging us to to 'hold fast' to Jesus and not to fall back into our old worldview or fall away as we live in a fleeting world.

Tim Theule | Philemon 1:1-25 | 4/10/2016

Philemon is utterly and intriguingly unique among all the 27 books of the New Testament.  It's a letter from Paul to a man named Philemon about a runaway slave named Onesimus.  But what it does it have to do with us?

Ben Collins | Titus 2:11-14 | 4/3/2016

How does what we believe relate to what we do? How should we relate to those who have different beliefs than we do? These are two of the big questions Paul addresses in his letter to Titus, and we will see that the Gospel and good works cannot be separated and that those good works include silencing false teaching and faithfully loving the lost.

2 Timothy

Tim Theule | 2 Timothy 3:14, 4:8 | 3/13/2016

Last words are lasting words!  Second Timothy is the Apostle Paul's second letter to his understudy, young Pastor Tim, but also, presumably, the last letter Paul wrote before his death.  It's an urgent, heart-felt challenge to Gospel faithfulness in Gospel ministry.

1 Timothy

Tim Theule | 1 Timothy 3:14-16 | 3/6/2016

First Timothy is the first of three letters that Paul wrote to pastors of local churches in the first century.  First Timothy is filled with timeless, relevant teaching on the purpose, priorities and practices of local churches in all times and places.

2 Thessalonians

Tim Theule | 2 Thessalonians 1:3-10, 2:1-2, 3:11-13 | 2/28/2016

Paul's second and short letter to the Thessalonians is written for 3 clear and practical reasons.  2 Thessalonians is our next stop on our Route 66 Road Trip Across the Bible.

1 Thessalonians

Ben Collins | 1 Thessalonians 1:2-10 | 2/21/2016

What do you write to those famous for their faith amidst affliction? See Paul's challenge to the believers in Thessalonica to serve the Lord and to wait well for His return fueled by their glorious hope in Christ.

Tim Theule | Colossians 2:6-15 | 2/14/2016

The book of Colossians is all about the supremacy and sufficiency of Jesus Christ.   He is Lord of all and our only Savior.

Tim Theule | Philippians 1:12-30 | 2/7/2016

The clear message of this little book of Philippians is that true joy is not dependent on circumstances, but in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Here the Apostle Paul not only shares his own joy, but challenges the Philippians to 'Rejoice in the Lord always.'

Tim Theule | Ephesians 1:3-23 | 1/31/2016

'Who am I?'  It's one of the big questions of life that we're all trying to answer.  Paul in the book of Ephesians teaches us that God in the Gospel offers an alternative answer to all the options and answers the world offers us.

Tim Theule | Galatians 1:6-24 | 1/17/2016

As the Apostle Paul planted and oversaw churches across the 1st Century Mediterranean world, his constant and highest priority was fighting for a Biblical understanding and application of the Gospel across all of life.  Nowhere is that more clear than in his letter to the Galatians.

2 Corinthians

Tim Theule | 2 Corinthians 4:1-18 | 1/10/2016

As Paul continues to wrestle with the unruly church at Corinth in 2 Corinthians, he highlights the paradoxical, counter-intuitive, counter-cultural way of the Gospel.  It was the way of Jesus, it was the way of Paul and he's striving to help them see it's their way. . . and ours, too.

1 Corinthians

Tim Theule | 1 Corinthians 10:31-33 | 1/3/2016

Jesus loves a broken bride!  No book reminds us of this fact better than First Corinthians.  The church at Corinth was a mess!  In this message, we dig down to the core issue that was driving the mess and we see how Paul lovingly addresses it.

Tim Theule | Romans 1:16-17 | 11/15/2015

The book of Romans is the Apostle Paul's longest letter and contains his most comprehensive explanation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It's an amazing book in breadth and depth. It should cause us to praise, lead us to change and drive us to share God's powerful, life-giving Gospel as often as we can.

Tim Theule | Acts 9:31 | 11/8/2015

The book of Acts is enormously significant in the scope of the New Testament as it tells of the spread of the Gospel of Jesus which results in the multiplication of disciples and the emergence of local churches throughout the Roman Empire.  The multiplication of Gospel disciples throughout the book of Acts continues today as we continue as 'witnesses' of the life-changing, life-giving message of Jesus.

Jeff Jennings | John 10:11 | 11/1/2015

John writes his gospel with the specific purpose, that by seeing the miraculous signs that Jesus accomplishes, you and I will believe that He is the Messiah the Son of God who gives eternal life. It is to this unique picture of Christ that we turn and consider.

Ben Collins | Luke 24:51 | 10/25/2015

The Gospel of Luke tells of all that Jesus began to do and teach, climaxing with his resurrection and ascension. This climax becomes a hinge for all that Jesus continued to do and to teach in Luke's second volume, Acts. We will closely consider Luke's climax and feel its significance for our lives today.

Tim Theule | Mark 1:1 | 10/18/2015

The Gospel of Mark is the 'action/adventure' of the 4 Gospels.  Mark tips his hand and  reveals his purpose in chapter 1:1 and provides a terrific guide for getting our heads around the book . . . 'The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.'

Tim Theule | Matthew 16:15-17 | 10/11/2015

We officially hit the road on the New Testament leg of our Route 66 Road Trip Across the Bible with a look at Matthew, the first of the four Gospels.  In this message, we explore the structure of Matthew, the uniqueness of Matthew, and the message of Matthew.

An Introduction to the New Testament
